The recent outbreaks of snow have affected most areas of the UK, inevitably with some places seeing more than others. Sections of the M25 Motorway were closed leaving hauliers stranded overnight in the cabs; Kent was nearly cut off from the rest of the country while those unfortunate enough to be caught on the 20-mile stretch of the M8 motorway which was closed for 48 hours due to snow and ice had a grim time indeed. Hats off to those hauliers who, despite the appalling weather, still managed to complete their deliveries. They certainly demonstrated a lot more grit than was available from local highway authorities who had, incidentally, claimed to have more than enough supplies to last the Winter. The Association’s staff also worked hard to get the message over; some travelling miles in appalling weather to meet a film crew, only to be told, in one instance, that the interview would be cut short as England’s failed bid to host the world cup was more important! Right now temperatures are again beginning to drop and it looks certain that we shall get more snow in the next couple of days. But whatever the weather, UK hauliers will be doing all they can to make sure it’s business as usual wherever possible. And, at this time of year, that’s particularly important. It’s just a pity that it takes a spell of atrocious weather to make rest of the country realise the importance of the service we provide.
